Make a proclamation of Hajj to mankind: they will come to you on foot

After the construction of Ka’ba, Allah commanded Ibrahim [peace be upon him] saying: “Make a proclamation of Hajj to mankind: they will come to you on foot and on lean camels from every distant quarter.” Ibrahim [peace be upon him] pleaded, “O, Allah how shall my voice reach all of those people?” Allah told him that his duty was only to give the call and it is up to Allah to make it reach the people. And then the prophet Ibrahim [peace be upon him] made the proclamation, and the voice reached every person of the world. And everyone destined to perform Hajj till the Day of Judgment heard the voice and responded to it.[Tafseer ibn Katheer].

In this verse Allah mentions those who travel for Hajj on foot prior to those who use any mode of transportation for this end. On the basis of such preference, some of the scholars opined that travelling for Hajj on foot is better than using any mode of transportation. On the other hand some of the scholars are of the view that the prophet peace and blessings be upon him, used transportation for his first and the last Hajj. So using the means of transportation for Hajj is better than going on foot. [Tafseer ibn Katheer]

Allamah Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani,  wrote in his famous commentary on al-Bukhari,that Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to go to Hajj on foot, because in Quran Allah mentions those who travel for Hajj on foot prior to those who use any mode of transportation for this end. [Fathulbari, chapter: obligation of Hajj and its virtues].

Some of the companions(may Allah pleased with them) narrated that the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “one who travels for Hajj on foot from Makkah and continues his travel on foot till returning to Makkah, 700 rewards out of the rewards of Haram are written for each stephetakes. He was questioned: What are the rewards of Haram? He said: One good deed brings one lac rewards. [Al-Mustadrak, chapter: Virtues of Hajj by travelling on foot, Akhbaarumakkah by Fakihi, Almujam al-Kabeer by al-Tabraani, Sahih ibn Khuzaimah, Masnad Hakim].

Abdullah bin Abbas, Abdullah bin Umar and Abu Hurairah(may Allah be pleased with them) used to go to Hajj from Makkah on foot. And everyone who can do thatshould acquire such an excellence. As Haram’s leader of congregational prayer mentioned it in his sermon, which is available on alminber.net, sermon no: 1010.

Thepilgrims feel inconvenience while travelling to Hajj, despite the availability of transportation services like buses and trains and become extremely tired in their journey. Butif they know this virtue of such a travel mentioned in this Hadith,it shouldfunction as a remedy to ease their inconvenience.

May Allah ease the journey of pilgrims. Amen.
